Just came from a visit to one of the "Tamales Ladies" in the Mission. Not sure why no one has yet to ask for her name, but is Maria and she caught my eyes by selling tamales right at the entrance of the 24th Street BART station. She's not carrying any beef or chicken tamales until 3pm today, but she is currently selling a bunch of strawberry tamales for $1.50 each and they are served warm in a stainless steel pot. My bright pink tamal was wrapped in two thin layers of corn husks with good size and tasted sweet and buttery with a sprinkle of stuffed raisins to extend its flavor. I've tasted many sweet tamales in the past and this was among the best I've tried. I hope to go back another day to try her savory tamales. In addition to tamales, Maria also sells children's clothing, shoes, toys, and a few adult size t-shirts and pants. She's hard to miss. Just go to the 24th BART station and she's standing right next to the flower lady across the street from McDonald's. Be sure to be on the look out. You'll be enriched!

So, there's this El Salvadorean (I think) lady who sits at the top of the 24th Street BART every so often selling tamales and pupusas in a big stainless steel pot. For $1.25 for a tamale (chicken), it's hard to beat. And they're pretty good, the banana leaf wrapped variety. No, not close to the real, legendary, Tamale Lady. But not too bad either.
